As a self-proclaimed percussionist, I sometimes don’t understand the most basic tools of the trade. For example, I have never been a big fan of the tambourine. And it is largely due to the fact that I do not understand its purpose and place in music. Perhaps it has to do with being raised in a church where only the old people played the tambourine, and therefore I distinctly and intentionally steered clear of using it in my own music. Either way, age and wisdom has taught me to embrace this interesting instrument, for it is an essential part of any drummer’s kit.
